Getting a million pounds Investment and loosing everything!

Its 6.30am in the morning, the month is January, and the year is 1994. The birds are tweeting; the sun is rising. I am 24 years of age and have been working night and day for nearly three years building my promotional clothing business. I am on the way to my office, situated above my mum’s shop in Epping Essex. Today is the day that is going to change my life forever. I am going to sign a contract today that will secure me over £2 million pounds worth of imported clothing from Indonesia. The problem is that I do not have one single penny to put down as collateral.

Last night I was working on a fast food stall and Wembley Arena earning extra money selling hotdogs to support my business. On the way home at 2am D:ream were playing on the radio “Things can only get better”.

I had worked on the stock market as a blue button when I was 16. The stock market crashed a year later and I lost my job. I bought my first market stall business when I was 18 years of age costing me £15,000. I also bought my first house when I was 18 and interest rates increased sharply to 15%, resulting in losing my £34,000 life savings that I had invested. I went bankrupt when I was 21 and thought my world was at an end. I clawed back from bankruptcy and started my promotional business when I was 21. I had already experienced major adversity and I was still only a baby.

I arrive at my office in Epping at 7am to prepare for my biggest ever business deal, one that would set me on the road to entrepreneurial stardom. A Korean gentleman called Mr Kim was arriving at 11am to see my business in action. He had been sent by his company, The Kolon Corporation, a multi-billion dollar organisation to open export channels in Europe and I was his one of his UK supply options.

The other two companies who wanted this contract were already turning over millions of pounds, had an established client base and had sound financial backing. Not only that, they had showrooms and warehousing in the clothing wholesale capital of London, Commercial Road E1.

My company was turning over just £250,000 a year. I had little stock and few customers. My first floor office was 300 sq ft with a few racks of stock. I had no office furniture and only two spare chairs, one of which had a broken leg and paint all over it.

I knew that I had to impress Mr Kim and I also knew that if I secured the deal it would mean that I could take my company to a multi million pound turnover business, pretty much over night. In business belief is everything and if you are prepared to do what your competitors do not have the imagination or balls to do then you will win.

I called in four friends dressed in smart suits and sat them at desks and placed phones on the desks that were not connected to any phone lines. I told them that when Mr Kim arrives that they should be on the phones closing deals and mentioning high profile companies. I also asked my family to call and place orders at a precise time and not to stop until we called to say that Mr Kim had left.

It’s 10.45am and Mr Kim had arrived early. My palms were sweaty, my heart was beating and my legs started to shake. I had to calm myself down and prepare for the pitch of the century. The boys were ready, the order pads were out, phones were in their ears ready to take orders and my family were ready to call in 5 minutes to place orders…… Ok action stations here we go!

I greeted Mr Kim downstairs, shook his hand and walked him up the stairs to my office. The only two incoming phones lines I had were ringing off the hook. The sales guys were on the phones that were not plugged into anything pitching customers and taking orders. My family were playing their part in helping me secure the deal.

Mr Kim questioned me for almost two hours nonstop. The sales guys kept taking order and my family as requested kept ringing in. After about an hour someone took an order from my family, later I found out it was dad. The order was for 6000 jackets and I can remember saying to myself “calm down family”, that is an order for £120,000 and if they keep placing silly order like that, it’s going to blow my deal out of the water.

Mr Kim had questioned me about sales, marketing, manufacturing, ranges and design styles, colours and size ordering breakdowns. We had discussed import and export duty, ports of origin and ports of destination. In fact we had covered everything from fabric and the mills that would be making it to container sizes, shipping and warehousing costs.

I understood it all and had been studying about manufacturing for a long time and besides, both of my parents had inducted me into the world of fashion from about 10 years of age – Thank you mum and dad!

Mr Kim knew that I was buying jackets from a Company in London called The Cobles Company ran by a Jewish man called Lawrence Cohen. Mr Kim also knew that Mr Cohen was spending a good few million dollars in Indonesia producing the jackets. What I did not know is that Mr Kim knew his exact import numbers and had the use of the factory two streets away producing the same goods and he had his eyes set of Western Stardom and needed me to make his dream a reality.

Another 30 minutes went buy and I held my nerve and made Mr Kim believe that I did not need his imports. I finally shook hands and Mr Kim left the building.

What I had achieved in the last two and a half hours was this:- I secured over £2 million pounds of imported goods ordered and ready to be delivered in ninety days to my 20,000 sq ft warehouse. The beauty of the deal was this. I did not have to lay out a single penny security. I had just placed an order for £2 million pounds without a single penny deposit. To this day I have not heard of a deal being done like that by a guy of 24 years of age.

I had no warehouse, no customers, no distribution and no way of even financing the deal I had just signed. I had just ninety days to prepare to take a business from turning over £250k a year to a £3 million a year business.

I did just that and by 1996 I was supplying Walt Disney, Coca Cola, Wembley Stadium, Capital Radio, The Spice Girls and had supplied products to just every brand that you could imagine from food to drinks, pop and rock groups, formula one racing teams and SkyBSB. I built a blue chip client network that was the envy of the promotional clothing world. I was turning over £3.3 million pounds a year, had been approached by Dunn and Bradstreet for outstanding growth as well as Sir Richard Branson’s Fast track 100.

It all seemed to be going so well until the Far East Crashed in 1998 costing me over half a million pounds and everything that I had built over a 5 year period.

When you lose everything it hurts, but the extraordinary people get back up, learning from their experiences to go on and achieve greater things and that’s why – Everyday People Achieve Extraordinary Things.

Best Wishes

Jane Hardy – For People in Debt

February 23, 2011 Leave a comment

Times are hard – but stop reminding me!

When times are tough and with so many people in debt, the last thing we want to hear is more bad news, isn’t it?  Government statistics can be quite depressing. For example, they say now that 40% of people struggle to make it to pay-day.

I don’t know about you, but I believe that many people go into denial and cannot relate to being a statistic.  Many of my clients say, ‘Well, I never thought I’d be one of those people!’

However there isn’t an eternal pot of money. Our income has limits. So at what point do people start to realise their outgoings exceed their incomings?

Let’s just put some perspective into this before we attempt any solutions. I think that many were lured into debt around two years ago -it was almost fashionable. ‘Sometime, somewhere in Never Never Land, I may have to pay it off, but hey, look on the bright side, not YET!’

Then what happened?  The banks overspent, too! Wow, how can they get it so badly wrong? The bedrock of society, the cash cow for the world’s industry and population… and it’s not just in the UK, it’s now most of Europe, and beyond.

In the UK, not only did they have to turn to the government for support, the taxpayer had to take  ownership of this exclusive Banking Club. So the senior bankers were gambling with some fairly hack decisions, by all accounts, and with public money. In a less stable economy, our personal bank balances would have been wiped clean.  And these are the guys we trusted?

Whether you love statistics or hate them, or even just question their reliability, one of my sources of information states that seven million people won’t be able to pay their bills after last Christmas.  January can be one of those heart-stopping months where people take a sharp intake of breath and figure out if they can afford to pay of their credit card bills in one payment or have to stretch it out for 2-3 months; agreeing nervously to pay the inevitable interest too.

Perhaps it’s ironic that we buy discounted goods in the sales. There is a certainly a feel-good factor in getting new clothes for half the ticket price, but really, what’s the true cost after we’ve delayed and paid our credit card bills?

When running into a home accounts deficit, the word debt crops up, of course. That can be a hammer blow that throws up all kinds of emotions. First is disbelief, then usually an expletive. Next a sinking feeling, maybe a cold sweat. And that is where all constructive, measured thought can stop.

When we see this kind of bad news, we often first think there has been some kind of mistake. ‘This cannot be my fault, my partner has paid for something unexpectedly or the bank must have got it wrong.  How can I possibly not have my finances under control?’

As a knee-jerk reaction, we can rush to our savings account, re-checking the balances for quick re-assurance. Our ‘Rainy Day’ Savings have taken an age to accumulate and we don’t want to call on them. ‘Damn it, we were saving for holiday, a new car, a new kitchen… now we’re going to need them just to stand still.’

Another statistic states that a third of people do not discuss their family money worries with their partner. This just compounds the problem when we think that ‘things will sort themselves out’, the problem will go away if I don’t think about it’. None of us likes to think that our standard of living needs to make a step change. I’ll be looking at change in further blogs.

Let no one kid you, there are no easy ‘outs’ to this kind of problem. That would be a bit like saying to someone who is suffering from depression, ‘Oh come on now, cheer up!’  -  Are there ever any easy solutions to a financial situation? They are always contingent on several factors.

However, expertise in this area is at hand. It is all familiar territory to One Stop Financial Security yet each client’s circumstances is different and that’s our starting point. Our business has been born not from opportunism or capitalising on the worries of others. My particular expertise comes from fifteen years in the world of finance and understanding how to explain the world of money; then to finding long term solutions.

You may be thinking that this service is expensive. It’s not; we work with you with a measured short and long term programme of support and give you a tactical recovery plan.

We’re here to help you get through this temporary glitch, not to judge you. With effort on all sides we can make things change for you. It’s what we do and we’re good at it. Call me, as soon as you can, Jane Hardy, on Freephone 0800 860 0312.  Email – jane@osfs.co.uk.  www.osfs.co.uk.

Bradley Chapman – An Entrepreneur's Journey

Hello everybody

Bradley Chapman – Am I a fool or should I keep going?

Do you know what, I just do not know. In fact and to be completely honest with you, I am completely lost at the moment in both my business and personal lives. My vision has come at such a great cost not only to me but my family, my children and it has affected the ones who love me and I am just not being fair to them all.

My health is suffering as a result of my drive to make a success of what I’m doing at Raw Business, my partner has been put through hell and my kids need me to be there for  them not dead to the world, exhausted and no energy at weekends – when is should be vibrant, alive and loving life..

On a good day I am one of the most highly motivated and inspirational people I know and on a bad day, my heart misses beats, my stomach sinks and my head just feels numb.  In terms of motivation just ask the 150 people who queued to see me recently at our recent trade show at London Excel – I blew them away! You only have to ask my parents or my loving partner Emma to realise just how destructive I can be when I’m not Mr Motivator.

I have worked tirelessly all of my adult life and it has been filled with highs and lows but turning 40 last week has made me realise that I have to change now if am to be success healthy, a good father and husband – so why am I not doing it you ask?

I am afraid, scared and a little jumbled up inside and I don’t know whether I need a good business coach, a therapist both or just simply need putting down. I know that I can work miracles but after the twists and turns in my life, I guess my tank is just empty – of course that is an excuse, truthfully I am scared.

So much has happened over the last few months so, where do i start. There just does not seem to be enough hours in the day to run the business, which at best is a beast, let alone communicate my raw open and honest thoughts to you all – which I said I would always do.

Do I talk about the challenges that like many of you, I have faced over the last 3 years in building a business network for entrepreneurs in the hope that you will not only be able to associate with me but also act to help bring positive change that will potentially increase business success rates in the UK or do I talk about happy clappy stuff that really does not help grass-roots business owners?

It has to be Raw open and honest and if it helps you then it helps me.
When I first thought about launching an entrepreneur network I came up with Million Impossible, which was my first attempt at creating a web site that would enable business owners and entrepreneurs not only to build their businesses through networking and building contacts but also and more importantly help you see the wider picture.

As many of you know, I secured investment in January 2010 from Simon Dolan, a successful businessman that has spent 20 years building a business from a tenner to a current and personal value of around £65 million pounds. Together we launched Raw Business in January 2010. The brand now combines our magazine, online networking website and face to face events.

So what is the wider picture – How do we embrace opportunity?

To me it is about looking at every call, every email that comes in and every person that you meet or are introduced to as an opportunity – YES OPPORTUNITY!

Too many of us dismiss very quickly these opportunities because we either do not have the time or quite simply we look at the skin and not what could be inside the opportunity, in other words we judge people or situations too quickly. Just because somebody is different does not mean that they do not have some to say or do that represents an opportunity to us.

Explore these opportunities as you never actually know what’s behind the door unless you open it. Open doors meet people and talk to them with absolutely no preconceived ideas of what the outcome might be and I guarantee that positive opportunities will emerge.

I have learned so much about people in the last few years and I know this – Everyone one of them has a nugget to offer, you just have to pan for it to find it. I am also string enough to admit that I am missing out on opportunities every day by not being the 100% that I can be – are you?

Being in business is so glamorous – Just look at the guys on Dragons Den

This is quite simply not true. Being is business is one of the hardest things to do successfully and that is why 80% fail within 5 years of startup. We all love to see and hear about success stories and I should know more than most. I have the great pleasure to interview very successful entrepreneurs such as Charlie Mullins, Caprice Bourret, Jacqueline Gold, Duncan Bannatyne, Rachel Elnaugh and fairly unknown entrepreneurs such as John Griffin who owns Addison Lee and he has a business worth £180 million pounds.

Unless you are prepared to roll up your sleeves, work night and day and at time with no pay, then forget going into business because it takes a number of key personal skills to be able to do it successfully.  I consider myself experienced in business across many sectors, and I still cannot get it right.

If you are going into business then before you do consider this – it may cost you everything including money, love and family and let’s not forget – your heart mind and soul!

If you can get it right, you have a strong business model and you can make solid profits, then you will lead a life of high-octane, fun-filled positively charged days. Before you start-up your business and perhaps fail double-check everything. Call me I’ll give my advice for free and if I cannot help then I am certain that I can find someone who can and remember that none of us know everything but together we do!

I have worked day and night tirelessly for the last 3 years, and I just do not seem to be at the place that I thought I would be right now.

So what do I need to adjust to bring positive change in my life?

Seek help is the first thing and by opening up to someone they might just be able to untangle the person who is Bradley Chapman.  Will I be strong enough to admit the things that I must change and will they will they be a strong enough person to deal with all the shit that I’ve experienced in my life and coach me to move forward? Mr Leeper, it’s about time so can you help this guy called Bradley Chapman to become the person he wants to be.

Follow me on Raw Business on my personal blog

Thank you all for reading my entry and I apologise it is not the normal me. We can’t be superstars all the time I guess.

Lots of love – Bradley Chapman

Stephen covey's seven habits of highly effective people®

December 5, 2009 1 comment

Habit 1 – be proactive®

This is the ability to control one’s environment, rather than have it control you, as is so often the case. Self determination, choice, and the power to decide response to stimulus, conditions and circumstances

Habit 2 – begin with the end in mind®

Covey calls this the habit of personal leadership – leading oneself that is, towards what you consider your aims. By developing the habit of concentrating on relevant activities you will build a platform to avoid distractions and become more productive and successful.

Habit 3 – put first things first®

Covey calls this the habit of personal management. This is about organising and implementing activities in line with the aims established in habit 2. Covey says that habit 2 is the first, or mental creation; habit 3 is the second, or physical creation.

Habit 4 – think win-win®

Covey calls this the habit of interpersonal leadership, necessary because achievements are largely dependent on co-operative efforts with others. He says that win-win is based on the assumption that there is plenty for everyone, and that success follows a co-operative approach more naturally than the confrontation of win-or-lose.

Habit 5 – seek first to understand and then to be understood®

One of the great maxims of the modern age. This is Covey’s habit of communication, and it’s extremely powerful. Covey helps to explain this in his simple analogy ‘diagnose before you prescribe’. Simple and effective, and essential for developing and maintaining positive relationships in all aspects of life.

Habit 6 – synergize®

Covey says this is the habit of creative co-operation – the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, which implicitly lays down the challenge to see the good and potential in the other person’s contribution.

Habit 7 – sharpen the saw®

This is the habit of self renewal, says Covey, and it necessarily surrounds all the other habits, enabling and encouraging them to happen and grow. Covey interprets the self into four parts: the spiritual, mental, physical and the social/emotional, which all need feeding and developing.

Entrepreneur School Guildford Launch Night

Anne Milton MP – Shadow Health Minister expressed her appreciation for entrepreneurs and the strength and courage that it takes to succeed and indeed bounce back from adversity. She also stressed that during any financial recession that the number of Mental Health cases rises significantly and she confirmed that it is a wide spread problem along with obesity and other mental and physical health issues. Anne was pleased to see a school for Entrepreneurs developing and would have loved to have been able to utilise a school for politicians when she started out her political career.

I was first to speak at the event and was pleased to share my own story of adversity from bankruptcy and beyond with all the attendees explaining my idea, how far we had come and I shared our aspirations of creating Regional Training Centres for Entrepreneurs for the future which might help decrease the business failure rates in the UK.

The Guildford School is being headed up by Mr Peter Hartley who is highly regarded and has a wealth of business and ex MOD based work experience. Peter is also passionate about the SME sector and particularly entrepreneurs. Peter faced his own personal adversity after caring and for his late wife who sadly passed away after being diagnosed with Cancer.

Peter is determined, kind, considerate and unmistakably determined and focused on helping to build Entrepreneur School now and in the near future. I am also pleased to say that he is now my friend.

With a BSc in Physics from Imperial College, Peter started in Business as a Graduate Engineer, collecting various post-Graduate Certificates and an MSc in his spare time. Peter spent some 37 years in corporate business, spanning most roles from basic Design and Development through to Test, Production, etc, before moving into Systems and Programme Management. The opportunities to travel around the world, supporting Marketing and carrying out contract negotiations, were used to great advantage. Having reached Cabinet level and 4* level contacts, he finally left international corporate business and took the Independent route, achieving the success and the work/leisure balance he wanted, with a Science and Technology Consultancy company.

Separately, the growing Business Consultancy, which he offers in conjunction with Entrepreneur School, is intended to provide support to others, whether via Tuition, CVs, Documentation, ICT and Websites, Assistance to find Investors, Commercial Analysis, Business Planning and Reviews.

Peter is currently working with SMEs to achieve major contracts (in excess of GB£40M) with the Primes; he is also setting up a complete Internet based business package as a Turnkey system for a Farmer who wishes to sell meat products directly to the public, providing ‘worthy individuals’ with CVs and websites, and still carrying out some Tuition work (the future lies in the Education of the young).

Peter’s hobbies include most Country sports, including fly-fishing (when he can catch the flies!) and breeding and working his gundogs. His garden is a place of continuous development, and he is now seeking a new house for a development project.

The Guildford Entrepreneur School speaker was Dr Andrew Lucas born in Melbourne, Australia in 1949, Andrew gained his Bachelor’s (Honours) Degree in Mechanical Engineering in Melbourne and later, his PhD in Aeronautical Engineering at Queens College, Cambridge University, UK.

After spending some 20 years in the UK and Australia, in a wide variety of high technology posts, including Associate Director of the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute, Andrew formed his first company, Agent Oriented Software (AOS) Pty. Ltd., Melbourne in 1997. From that beginning, Andrew then extended his activities across the UK the USA. Andrew has over thirty years of experience in various engineering roles in aerospace, software, robotics and defence.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Peter Hartley for putting so much energy into the night, Anne Milton MP for opening the school, Dr Andrew Lucas for delivering an inspiring and inspirational speech, the attendees, Robert Copping and Jeremy Webb who are also Entrepreneur School leaders and the team at MI for staying focused and dedicated during this very testing time and of course my family who keep pushing, driving and supporting me – without you none of this would be worth fighting for.

Have you pitched Simon Dolan Yet?

Simon Dolan went from paperboy to “Accountancy Guru” after he created SJD Accountancy now a multi million pound business that he started with just ten pounds. Simon’s firm currently employs around 150 people.

Simon is more than your average Entrepreneur, he runs a successful business and is now an active Business Angel investor. He has made the headlines recently offering a share of his £5 million investment fund to aspiring and experienced Entrepreneurs using Twitter.

When Simon was introduced to me I saw that he was not a high profile TV style Entrepreneur but something drew me to him and he kindly allowed me to run an interview. Read the Interview Here.

It was one of the most interesting interviews I have experienced. The reason I found it interesting was not because Simon is now a successful businessman but because he was listening to me and taking everything on board even though he had already gone through the adversity I spoke of. I could hear the cogs of thought, the calculation, the assessment of me and my business. It amazed me how quickly he grasped the concept of Million Impossible and took the time to ask about the business.

I was really inspired by the interview and have now had the pleasure of meeting Simon formally (I spilt coffee on his lovely reception floor at his offices) and I have met and interviewed his sister Lisa Keeble as well millionimpossible.com/entrepreneur-interviews.asp?iid=17″.

When you start a business it can be very difficult to secure investment and there are so many hoops to jump through. Simon has taken that myth and smashed it out of the ball park.

Simon Has Announced That He is Here & He is Here to Play!
I interviewed Simon again yesterday while he was enjoying a short break in Monaco with his family. I apologised for catching him on holiday and he said “No problem let’s talk”, that is the kind of support and availability you will get from Simon Dolan once you have passed the Twitter Test!

Why does Bradley Chapman think that he can help Increase the chances of Entrepreneur success rates?

Bradley Chapman came up with the idea of creating a UK and potentially a World leading Entrepreneur based support business back in 2007 after he had been through some major personal adversity after breaking up with the mother of his two children. Bradley had been involved in a wide range of businesses and had worked 6-7 days a week for most of his working career but found himself not being able to find one place that he could go to that would provide him with a cradle to the grave entrepreneur support network to help improve his chances of business success. He found that there were singular specific facilities available on the market but not one all encompassing entrepreneur based support service.

Million Impossible’s online network was born during November 2007 with zero members – but Bradley had a big dream that one day the company would become a world leading Entrepreneur Authority. Million Impossible have now progressed the business and offer both online networking (Million Impossible) , face to face networking (Entrepreneur School) and publish a business Magazine called (Raw Business Magazine) which features high profile Entrepreneurs like Rachel Elnaugh, Duncan Banatynne, Doug Richard and Max Clifford – The journey Is far from complete!

With the launch of Entrepreneur School Chelmsford in June 2008 and with 10,000 registered online members the business now has 10 ES school areas planned to go live during October and November 2009 with UK wide coverage planned by the end of 2010. Each school is run by an ES leader, who is also a Million Impossible online networking member. Attendance levels range from 15-30 people per event (held every two weeks) . As the exposure grows and the word spreads so will our attendance levels….

But that is not the final picture!

The company plans to open 3 regional Entrepreneur training centres during 2010 – one in the north, one in the midlands and one in the south. The residential training centres will be called “Entrepreneur School”. The schools will be syllabus lead with experienced and established entrepreneurs teaching aspiring entrepreneurs how to start up their business (safely). There will be a second tier syllabus for companies established under 2 years and a third tier master class for established business.

The Overall Aim!

To provide start up business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs with comprehensive start up knowledge using an initial training course. Upon leaving the course they gain automatic membership to an online network of 10,000 online contacts (continually growing) to do business and network with. The third benefit is Entrepreneur School local events which provides the Entrepreneurs with face to face networking opportunities – In fact everything that a business would need to start, grow and succeed!

Indeed cradle to the grave… or as Bradley suggests “Dreams to Reality”
