Getting a million pounds Investment and loosing everything!

Its 6.30am in the morning, the month is January, and the year is 1994. The birds are tweeting; the sun is rising. I am 24 years of age and have been working night and day for nearly three years building my promotional clothing business. I am on the way to my office, situated above my mum’s shop in Epping Essex. Today is the day that is going to change my life forever. I am going to sign a contract today that will secure me over £2 million pounds worth of imported clothing from Indonesia. The problem is that I do not have one single penny to put down as collateral.

Last night I was working on a fast food stall and Wembley Arena earning extra money selling hotdogs to support my business. On the way home at 2am D:ream were playing on the radio “Things can only get better”.

I had worked on the stock market as a blue button when I was 16. The stock market crashed a year later and I lost my job. I bought my first market stall business when I was 18 years of age costing me £15,000. I also bought my first house when I was 18 and interest rates increased sharply to 15%, resulting in losing my £34,000 life savings that I had invested. I went bankrupt when I was 21 and thought my world was at an end. I clawed back from bankruptcy and started my promotional business when I was 21. I had already experienced major adversity and I was still only a baby.

I arrive at my office in Epping at 7am to prepare for my biggest ever business deal, one that would set me on the road to entrepreneurial stardom. A Korean gentleman called Mr Kim was arriving at 11am to see my business in action. He had been sent by his company, The Kolon Corporation, a multi-billion dollar organisation to open export channels in Europe and I was his one of his UK supply options.

The other two companies who wanted this contract were already turning over millions of pounds, had an established client base and had sound financial backing. Not only that, they had showrooms and warehousing in the clothing wholesale capital of London, Commercial Road E1.

My company was turning over just £250,000 a year. I had little stock and few customers. My first floor office was 300 sq ft with a few racks of stock. I had no office furniture and only two spare chairs, one of which had a broken leg and paint all over it.

I knew that I had to impress Mr Kim and I also knew that if I secured the deal it would mean that I could take my company to a multi million pound turnover business, pretty much over night. In business belief is everything and if you are prepared to do what your competitors do not have the imagination or balls to do then you will win.

I called in four friends dressed in smart suits and sat them at desks and placed phones on the desks that were not connected to any phone lines. I told them that when Mr Kim arrives that they should be on the phones closing deals and mentioning high profile companies. I also asked my family to call and place orders at a precise time and not to stop until we called to say that Mr Kim had left.

It’s 10.45am and Mr Kim had arrived early. My palms were sweaty, my heart was beating and my legs started to shake. I had to calm myself down and prepare for the pitch of the century. The boys were ready, the order pads were out, phones were in their ears ready to take orders and my family were ready to call in 5 minutes to place orders…… Ok action stations here we go!

I greeted Mr Kim downstairs, shook his hand and walked him up the stairs to my office. The only two incoming phones lines I had were ringing off the hook. The sales guys were on the phones that were not plugged into anything pitching customers and taking orders. My family were playing their part in helping me secure the deal.

Mr Kim questioned me for almost two hours nonstop. The sales guys kept taking order and my family as requested kept ringing in. After about an hour someone took an order from my family, later I found out it was dad. The order was for 6000 jackets and I can remember saying to myself “calm down family”, that is an order for £120,000 and if they keep placing silly order like that, it’s going to blow my deal out of the water.

Mr Kim had questioned me about sales, marketing, manufacturing, ranges and design styles, colours and size ordering breakdowns. We had discussed import and export duty, ports of origin and ports of destination. In fact we had covered everything from fabric and the mills that would be making it to container sizes, shipping and warehousing costs.

I understood it all and had been studying about manufacturing for a long time and besides, both of my parents had inducted me into the world of fashion from about 10 years of age – Thank you mum and dad!

Mr Kim knew that I was buying jackets from a Company in London called The Cobles Company ran by a Jewish man called Lawrence Cohen. Mr Kim also knew that Mr Cohen was spending a good few million dollars in Indonesia producing the jackets. What I did not know is that Mr Kim knew his exact import numbers and had the use of the factory two streets away producing the same goods and he had his eyes set of Western Stardom and needed me to make his dream a reality.

Another 30 minutes went buy and I held my nerve and made Mr Kim believe that I did not need his imports. I finally shook hands and Mr Kim left the building.

What I had achieved in the last two and a half hours was this:- I secured over £2 million pounds of imported goods ordered and ready to be delivered in ninety days to my 20,000 sq ft warehouse. The beauty of the deal was this. I did not have to lay out a single penny security. I had just placed an order for £2 million pounds without a single penny deposit. To this day I have not heard of a deal being done like that by a guy of 24 years of age.

I had no warehouse, no customers, no distribution and no way of even financing the deal I had just signed. I had just ninety days to prepare to take a business from turning over £250k a year to a £3 million a year business.

I did just that and by 1996 I was supplying Walt Disney, Coca Cola, Wembley Stadium, Capital Radio, The Spice Girls and had supplied products to just every brand that you could imagine from food to drinks, pop and rock groups, formula one racing teams and SkyBSB. I built a blue chip client network that was the envy of the promotional clothing world. I was turning over £3.3 million pounds a year, had been approached by Dunn and Bradstreet for outstanding growth as well as Sir Richard Branson’s Fast track 100.

It all seemed to be going so well until the Far East Crashed in 1998 costing me over half a million pounds and everything that I had built over a 5 year period.

When you lose everything it hurts, but the extraordinary people get back up, learning from their experiences to go on and achieve greater things and that’s why – Everyday People Achieve Extraordinary Things.

Entrepreneurs – You will know what to do in the morning?

September 29, 2008 Leave a comment

They say that if you have a lot on your mind and you need to either make important decisions, decide which route or direction to take your business, that if you sleep on it you very often find the answers that you are looking for!

I have deliberated for well over a week on the position that I find myself in and I still do not have the answers that I need. I am uncertain whether I have just worn myself out after 38 years of burning the candle at both ends or if the real reason is that actually I am scared of taking the next steps..

If I were honest, which I should be after creating the Worlds first honest Entrepreneur Network www.millionimpossible.com and now having launched our online Entrepreneur Magazine www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com ironically named Raw Entrepreneur – The truth is that I am scared about the next steps.

I am scared for a few reasons and I have to think very carefully about how I put this as I might offend some very close colleagues and friends of mine.

FIRSTLY – I am tired and of course a little burned out but that is no excuse for me not standing and the helm regardless of my personal situation. My team looks to me for inspiration, guidance, belief and direction.

I have provided direction and I must say that all I visualised has happened, perhaps not as quickly as one would like but is happening. The business has gained a certain momentum and we have created a market for our service.

I cannot keep finding the route and delivering the ideas and even if I do they need to be followed out to a tee and they are not.

SECONDLY – I now look to others to find the strength and  courage to move out of their comfort zones and attack or at least try something that are either unfamiliar with or scared of, baring in mind most will not admit that they are afraid, instead they will deflect and project  their fears on to another person or situation.

THIRDLY – I know that to move the business to next level it will take precise planning, a major cash flow boost and I will need the whole team behind the effort. Unfortunately we have a mixture of abilities within our team but very few of the team will actually take the time to read, learn and absorb a new idea or indeed take the important time to gain a far greater knowledge than we currently possess.

Finding the Answer?

I am not sure what to do. I have tried to push my people forward but it has and is draining me. I cannot keep pushing and it is taking too much of my strength.

Should I accept that some people do not wish to better than who they are even thought I know that they are just like me – Afraid?

Should I accept that perhaps I am different in that I look at challenges as something that can be overcome?

Should I accept the fact that the younger generation have very little life skills and in fact most feel that the world owes them a living and that working hard is something that is a dying trade?

Should I stop driving the people I love to new heights, new ideas and new frontiers as I always have done?

The Answer

The real problem for me is that after all the pain and adversity that I have been through in the last two years that I know that I have to stay strong for anyone who seeks my help, advice and guidance for both their business and most importantly their personal lives which can greatly impact upon the decisions that as Entrepreneurs we make.

So after a week of deliberating I have made the decision that different people will act at different times, some may never take action but if I stop being me then what hope do we have for the people who need help, support and guidance the most? None….

I will keep battling, I will keep driving and I will continue believing that we are all capable of so much more. I will continue to encourage and empower the people around me with the goal that if we take small steps then it will make for a great journey…

If you are bankrupt it’s not the end of the line – What a difference a year can make!

August 20, 2008 2 comments

Bankruptcy is not the end of the road in fact it is just the beginning for many of us.

Million Impossible’s online business network started with one man’s dream to help Entrepreneurs overcome adversity even if they were starting from a position of bankruptcy and to provide a networking platform where all businesses could strategically grow their companies whilst learning from other Entrepreneurs mistakes as well as successes.

My name is Bradley Chapman and last year due to unforeseen financial and personal circumstances I declared myself bankrupt and just 10 months later I am proud and honoured to have been re-appointed as a Managing director of Million Impossible PLC.

The last year has been the most challenging year of my life and although I would urge anybody that is considering going into bankruptcy whether it be forced or your own choice to seek all alternative options available to you which you can do by speaking to an insolvency practitioner before you make your decision.

I came up with the idea of creating an Entrepreneur Network that enabled business people to be honest about the struggles and challenges that they face every day during their business careers and due to my own experiences I decided to call it Million Impossible.

Just ten months on Million Impossible’s Entrepreneur Network www.millionimpossible.com is growing more than I could have ever expected and I am also pleased to announce the launch of our new online digital magazine called “Raw Entrepreneur” which features Rachel Elnaugh former MD of Red Letter Days and panellist on the BBC’s Dragon Den programme www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com

We have also successfully launched our no cost, no catch, free to advertise online Business Directory for any UK business to use www.businesssourcer.com and we already have over 5000 adverts listed.

Another web site that we have successfully launched is called Number Sourcer www.numbersourcer.com where we offer some of the UK’s most cost effective telecoms numbering solutions. We offer 0800 and 0845 as well as town numbers for a one off life time payment of £99+ Vat. Our web site provide a call monitoring platform that helps you monitor all your incoming calls and it is an ideal way of ensuring that your advertising is working for you.

We have now proved that regardless of your financial position, providing you have the right people working with you within your network, that you can create a new life and business as long as you have the courage, strength and determination to succeed in your chosen field.

For Million Impossible my team and myself the journey has just begun and if you are the type of person who has had more than your fair share of challenges in your lifetime and believe that the glass is half full and not half empty, then we invite you to join our network and together we can go from dreams to reality. To join us and register as a member free just click www.millionimpossible.com and meet new friends and expand your business network.

What a difference a year makes!

"Raw Entrepreneur" On-line Digital Magazine Launches today!

August 18, 2008 2 comments

Million Impossible Entrepreneur and Business networking website www.millionimpossible.com has taken another great step forward today with the much anticipated launch of their new on line digital magazine “RAW ENTREPRENEUR” featuring Rachel Elnaugh former MD and owner of Red Letter Days – The Gift Experience Business which she built from scratch.

Our magazine can be viewed on the following URL www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com

“Raw Entrepreneur” is a magazine for Entrepreneurs who have the courage and confidence to talk about the challenges that they face every day as they build their businesses. The launch edition features articles from all the main directors at million Impossible including myself as well our members who are sharing their journey’s with our readers.

So many business networks focus purely on success and happy clappy “Look at me” type Entrepreneurs or the BIG EGO’s that exist in the business market place. Million Impossible focuses on honesty with our members talking frankly about the challenges as well as successes that we all face and achieve during our business careers thus providing – The “ERROR” factor for our Entrepreneur members and readers to learn form each other.

It takes a stronger person to judge themselves first before judging other people.

As a business we are innovators and pioneers and therefore we have already educated other larger more “Cash Rich” networks who are or have acted on our ideas……. There was only one first man on the moon and there is only one Million Impossible “Innovators of Entrepreneur and Business Networking and Online business Publishing”- Million Impossible Plc

We hope that our new online magazine helps other Entrepreneurs who have or are going through challenging times as indeed we have during our journey

ENTREPRENEURS YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE OUR DREAMS A REALITY.

Entrepreneurs find the STRENGTH whatever it takes

It’s Tuesday and we are only 3 days away from making the next step in Million Impossible’s journey a reality. Our online magazine called “Raw Entrepreneur” which features Million Impossible’s Entrepreneur members talking frankly about their journey’s is about to take flight.

The launch edition of the magazine features Rachel Elnaugh former MD of Red Letter Days and The BBC’s Dragon’s Den panelist. Rachel talks honestly about the loss of Red Letter Days and the knock on effect which can your emotions as well as your finances.

Well i titled the blog entry with the words “Strength” and i realise this week just how much strength you really need. As Entrepreneurs we are tested to the limits every day in terms of our belief and courage but where do we get the strength from?

Was it something our mother’s or father’s said to us that makes us fight to the death or do we just have something to prove to ourselves? Well I’m not quite sure.

I know that i have a burning desire to make Million Impossible a success and i believe most Entrepreneurs embark on a journey to make something real but i also feel that during this journey you actually go through a journey of self discovery that reaffirms your strengths and weaknesses..

They say that you are only as strong as the sales you make and this week we have struggled as a business in terms of revenue and that is due to lack of support for our sales team..  but at the same time i realise that the younger generation all feel that the world owes them a living.

When i was young i worked, today i still work and unless i make it happen no one else will. I try to be strong for all the people i love and care about but sometimes, just sometimes they need to find the strength within themselves…

Strength does not just come from turning up at work, its actually about vision and going the extra mile or indeed going above and beyond the call of duty,m in fact whatever it takes to become successful at whatever you do..

Anyway back to me and let’s talk FRANKLY about strength.. The last 5 days have been very tough. We are on the verge of getting our new online Entrepreneur Magazine published and read by what we hope will be in excess of 100,000 readers.

Strength is what you need to become a successful entrepreneur
Strength is what you call upon when the going gets tough
Strength is all you have when you are filled with doubt
Strength is what it takes to overcome adversity

Creating our Entrepreneur business network has tested our strength to the limits and i can certainly help any business person grow a business on a tight budget… We may be sifting through the trash cans at night to see what we can use after all “One man’s rubbish is another mans Gold” but we have become masters of stretching a pound note in the process.

If you have been tested with your business then i would like to hear from you. Actually you are not alone yet it takes courage and strength to share with others your darkest moments.

Can you share yours?

If so please leave a comment or join other entrepreneurs on our online network www.millionimpossible.com

Entrepreneurs move towards On-line Business Networking

August 5, 2008 1 comment

Some say the financial climate is dire, while others say business is booming. Depending on whether you view the glass as half full or half empty, it is fair to say that you can make money during a recession.

Many business are now using business networking as a  positive resource to buy goods and services on a more cost effective basis or indeed with the trust that is being built increasing sales revenue through a trusted business network.

Million Impossible is an Entrepreneur Network and after 9 months of development we are starting to see members promoting themselves on a pro-active basis and regularly talking to one another building relationships and doing business together.

This week alone we have purchased the following goods and services from our members:-

Ordered 4 new mobile phones from one member
A full car Valet from another member
Entered a 12 month design contract for our digital magazine
Instructed a new accountant for our business

Networking is key to growing your business but unless you pick up the phone and talk and introduce yourself you will not build a trusted network of business friends. The main thing to consider first is this…..

If you give you receive… Networking is about offering help first then you will start to see a return. Different business networks can offer varying benefits to their members and people usually gravitate towards the one that best suits their needs.

Million Impossible Plc www.millionimpossible.com is free to register and along with registration you will also receive 1 years free advertising for your business on Business Sourcer www.businesssourcer.com which is an online business advertising directory.

We welcome Entrepreneurs who can be honest about their position and share both their successes and their failures. Free members can upgrade to a full access membership at any time and for the month of August we are offering a 25% discount for full access membership for anyone ready the blog – Promo code (mil003) must be quoted in all correspondence.

Could Chapter 11 be coming to Britain?

Given the current state of the economy and phrases like “Credit Crunch” being mentioned as well as rumours of a looming, full blown recession I was glad to see that the Richard Report is looking for ways to help small businesses and entrepreneurs with a number of recommendations to the government.

Parliament’s Business & Enterprise Committee includes Doug Richard (the author of the Richard report) along with James Caan and Rachel Elnaugh, and although criticised for having sympathies with or involvement in failed businesses in the past, it is obvious that they know what difficulties small business owners encounter in their day-to-day business lives.

The committee made a number of recommendations including:-

Enterprise skills being woven into the education curriculum to encourage entrepreneurism and formal enterprise qualifications to be sponsored by the government to encourage banks and other backers to more more willing in financing individuals if they see they have had proper business training.

They also commented on the need for government not only to open procurement to small businesses but to provide encouragement through incentives where entrepreneurs can create new products or services to solve areas of concern in the UK. It was also recognised that the the role of banks needs to be reviewed. All too often start up businesses are not given the support they need and should consider other options rather than “Pulling the Plug” when a small business comes into difficulties. it was suggested that they should be made as culpable as a companies directors in any post business failure review performed by DBERR.

The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) being improved to give bigger tax breaks for people funding small business. Thatchers Business Expansion Scheme gave investors 100% tax relief for investment into small business in the past and the committee thought this should be a consideration in the future.

It was recognised that our attitude towards failed businesses was still very different to that of the US. In the UK a failed business carries a certain stigma where in the US failure is regarded as losing “Your Business Virginity”. The committee thought we could learn from the US system with Chapter 11 and safeguarding a persons home in the event of a business failure being considered.

Chapter 11 is a chapter in the US bankruptcy code. It allows a company in the US to reorganise their affairs. Chapter 7 of the code enables a company to cease trading and a trustee sells the companies assets with the funds being distributed amongst its creditors. Chapter 11 allows an attempt to stay in business while the bankruptcy court supervises a reorganisation. The rationale behind this is that in some cases a business is worth more is greater if reorganised and sold as a going concern than if it is reduced to the value of its remaining assets.

Some criticism has been aimed at the chapter 11 system, saying that it is a lenient “escape hatch” that encourages incompetent management an easy way out when encountering difficulties and damaging the efficiency of the US economy by allowing poor managers to continue in their roles. These same critics have noted that bankruptcy laws in Europe are far less lenient for failed businesses.

Whether all of the committee’s recommendations are taken on board, it can only be seen as encouraging that key members of the committee come from a truly entrepreneurial background with James Caan and Rachel Elnaugh (Who have both experienced business failure in the past) having key input from the point of view of the business owner.

Rachel Elnaugh is giving regular updates on her blog and will be contributing to Million Impossible’s online magazine which will launch with its first edition in the middle of August.

Million Impossible increases Google Page Ranks

Over the week our web site Million Impossible www.millionimpossible.com and The Unknown Entrepreneur www.theunknownentrepreneur.wordpress.com/ has received more pages being ranked by Google Page Rank.

As you know Google ranks web site for importance, relevance and Links from 0 – 10 ten being the highest.

www.millionimpossible.com/default.asp- Google Rank 4
www.millionimpossible.com/blog.asp- Google Rank 3
www.millionimpossible.com/member-spotlight.asp – Google Rank 3
www.theunknownentrepreneur.wordpress.com/ – Google Rank 5

Although we launched the test site for Million Impossible during November 2007, during which time our homepage received a rank of 3, we did not actually launch our stage two website until April 2008.

As a business we are trying to show that you can grow a business organically and receive a decent page rank over time. Since inception we have had very limited funds to grow the business, which is not unlike many businesses that are at start up stage.

The only thing that we are struggling with still is our forum, which sits in an I Frame. Our web developer changed the way that the page is seen a week ago and we should start to see the benefits very shortly.

On a final note, we are moving the site forward with limited capital and limited resources but on reflection we are all so proud to have achieved what we have during the last 9 months and one thing comes to mind – NEVER GIVE IN FIGHTING FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN.

Well done to Heidi, Colin and Mike for all of your hard on getting us this far!

Many Entrepreneurs will face Immense challenges during their careers that change their lives forever! Have you faced yours?

July 24, 2008 2 comments

So many Entrepreneurs face some pretty serious decisions during their business careers which will shape and determine the success or failure of their respective businesses. So what sets apart the really strong characters from the ones who either hide in shame or are just to proud to say “I made a mistake or I need help”….?

What is the difference between someone who gets back up after falling?

I believe that it is a combination of mental strength, courage, faith, believe and above all sheer determination in having the ability to over come any adversity to succeed in getting back up and having another go.  From the experiences of very hurtful personal situations like marriage and partnerships break ups or bankruptcy that can destroy a business to force majuere or mistakes from the decisions that we as Entrepreneurs have to make – is the mixture need to reach success.

When i came up with the idea of Million Impossible, it was just one mans dream to create something real, something honest and something that could touch the hearts and minds of all Entrepreneurs regardless of age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or personal financial circumstances.

The idea went from one mans dream who at the time was bankrupt to second a third a fourth and now over 1000 people are sharing that dream being members of Million Impossible. We expect our membership base to grow astronomically during the next three months as the Entrepreneur community starts to come together in feeling completely comfortable talking about their business challenges as well as their successes.

“The Honest Entrepreneur” is a title well placed to sum up what Million Impossible’s business network is all about and I owe my coming out and telling everybody my life and business story to a woman who i think has an amazing commercial acumen as well a being a very heart felt woman called Rachel Elnaugh former MD of the industry leading – Gift/ Experience business called “Red Letter Days” and former panelist on the BBC’s very successful and much loved “Dragons Den” programme.

I am so pleased that finally after 9 months of blood sweat and tears from the management team and myself that we have finally started to receive feedback from our members that what we are doing is not only unique in the way that we are approaching the “Raw Entrepreneur” in terms of honesty starting with myself being in the “Limelight of Criticism” but even more encouraging that i have now spoken to so many members that have been or are in very similar situations to myself and feel totally comfortable about expressing and sharing that with me.

IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT IF YOU HAVE THE COURAGE AND CONVICTIONS TO WALK THE PHYSICAL PATH THAT YOU ONLY FIND THE STRENGTH TO DO SO IN YOUR DREAMS THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY MAKE THEM A REALITY.

I guess the most important thing right now is to realise that none of us have to be alone and we all have a thing called emotion. Share that emotion and i guarantee that you will not only feel better but you will find an inner strength to continue on your path toward realising your dreams.

Our online digital magazine launches in about 3 weeks featuring Rachel Elnaugh and you visit her new website here http://www.rachelelnaugh.com/. Rachel offers business owners and Entrepreneurs everything from Mentoring and coaching to business Master classes and I can assure you all that it could be one of the most important investments that you could make this year.

If you have been through a challenging time in your business and you would to join us then please register fee by visiting our web site www.millionimpossible.com and you too could feature in the launch edition of our “Dreams to Reality” magazine.

If we all stand together and  help each other we will becomes the worlds most powerful Entrepreneur network.
