Sales meeting in the toilet (2005)

I am a dad of three children, Molly 7, Millie 6 and Henry who will be 2 shortly. I am on my third relationship and have experienced my fair share of adversity in my life. My family are very close and like any close family we spend a lot of time in each other’s houses.

My mum and dad, although semi retired now, were successful business people and worked in the retail fashion trade and without their support, guidance and the occasional kick up the butt, I would be lost. The integrity that they both possess is very difficult to find these days, especially in our modern generation.

Since a young lad I have been highly motivated and possess high levels of energy. I would and have worked all the hours around the clock and travelled great distances to go to work and earn a pound note.

I enjoy motivating others and love getting up on stage, speaking to an audience and doing some really crazy inspirational moves to get people to move out of their comfort zones.

I have run my own businesses and worked for other companies but one constant remains and that is – I want to be the best at what I do! During my business and personal career I have succeed and failed in equal proportion.

I was working in 2004 for a small advertising directory sales company and we had just 35 staff when I joined. I grew the staff headcount to over 250 people employed on a full and part time basis. The energy and sexiness within the outbound call centre environment that I created was truly awesome and on a good day, sales and motivational was unrivalled.

Sales on one particular day were way were way off what they should have been and my staffs were sluggish, not performing and KPI’s were way in the red zone. Even my managers were downbeat and were not inspiring their teams and I was starting to lose my patience.

I was watching the floor, which was an 8000 sq ft open planned call centre and waited for someone to take action. No action came and as a result I went to the front of the floor and told everyone to finish their calls, put their phones down and join me at the front of the floor.

I always held two meetings every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon after lunch. I was always well prepared and inspired my teams using a mixture of personal and business related topics and information.

People always used to say to me that my meetings were awesome and that I pushed people way beyond their own personal expectations for what they could achieve in sales and indeed their lives.

I have always believed that motivating and teaching people is a two way game. I always say “You hold onto one end of the rope and I will hold the other. As long as you hold on, ill hold on but if you let go then so will I”.

Inspiring people is an art and they have to love you, trust you and fear you all at the same time.

So, I am at the front of the floor and I now have 140 staff, 6 sales directors, 8 sales managers, an operations support team, IT team and the CEO looking on. I could see by the looks on their faces that they knew a crap storm was coming and there was an eerie silence as they waited to hear the inevitable.

The meeting that I was about to give them was by no means going to be my usual motivational and inspirational ye ha lets go type of address. This was going to be far from inspirational, but little did I know!

“OK team, sales are down, calls are down, profit for the day is down and not one of you, including my senior team have stood up and made any positive changes that could influence a turnaround for the day’s sales – Why? You have all the tools and personal and business reasons to achieve your daily goals. Yu have the ability and coupled with the superb product that we have you should be smashing the days sales out of the ball park – Why is it that we are having this crap day?”

Not one answer came from my entire team. They knew better and they also knew that in this team we fight, we fight for every inch and we stay on top of our game regardless of what challenges we face. That knew that with excellent performance come great benefits, commission rewards and other team and company incentives and recognition. On the contrary, poor performance comes with one almighty kick up the arse.

“OK then, if you guys are happy with such a crap performance then we are going to hold this meeting in the toilet, which is where the crap goes”.

With that I marched over 150 people into the men’s toilets and packed them in every piece of space that I could find. Some were standing on the toilets, others in the sinks, some were on other peoples shoulders and we were packed to the rafters. I forced and pushed every one into this toilet until the doors were bursting with people.

Whilst in the toilets I explained in no uncertain terms that we do not accept any kind of poor performance and that when things are not going to plan that you stop, adjust, evaluate, change and move forward. I cannot put the exact words in this book that I used but let’s say the use of my vocabulary was colourful.

Inside the room it was hot, stuffy and people were feeling uncomfortable being in the toilet, but they soon got the point. My HR Director was spitting kittens about my methods and I would not recommend using the toilet as meeting point for anyone in today’s tough employment law society.

The bottom line was this:-

I – My managers realised that they needed to see things before they happen as prevention is better than cure.

2 – Not everybody is motivated all of the time but if you can motivate and keep your top performers motivated then the rest will follow.

3- If you do not perform when I am around then the shit is going to hit the fan and literally, it did.

4 – You can bring some humour into your everyday business life and people will never forget these moments.

The outcome of the afternoon kick up the arse toilet session was that the team flew out of the toilets and went on to smash their daily target to pieces. Now I do not know whether it was because they did not want to go back into the hot sweaty toilet again for another spank or because they were actually inspired by my meeting. Either way, it got the job done and that’s the kind of unconventional guy I am.

Best Wishes for 2012

A great year ahead!

Entrepreneurs Who Hit Crisis Point – The British Library

November 14, 2008 Leave a comment

I have been very kindly invited by Rachel Elnaugh to become part of a four man panel of Entrepreneurs for an event being held at The British Library in January 2009. The theme of the event is “Entrepreneurs who hit crisis point”.

I am proud and honoured to be invited by Rachel to be a part of her team and more so that the event is being held at The British Library. The library is not only a London Architectural Icon but also offers amazing services that Entrepreneurs and small business can use to help them grow their businesses. The finer details of the show are yet to be announced and will appear on the library’s events calendar shortly.

I have been through immense challenges in my life in trying to achieve success and just as quickly as I thought that I had arrived at the doors of success, the carpet has been pulled from under my feet.

Bradley Chapman - Can you overcome any Adversity?

Bradley Chapman - Can you overcome any Adversity?

I can only blame so much of my costly business mistakes on global financial climates, greedy UK banks and other factors that were outside of my control. The main reason for making mistakes was in not having the necessary knowledge, skill or resources to establish the right path to take as well as receiving suitable advice as to the perils and pitfalls of taking any action and making decisions.

At 38 years of age I guess I am more experienced in how not to things as opposed to how to do things. We all have to make mistakes in order to learn the right way to do something but at what costs to yourself personally and or your business venture are acceptable before your reach crisis.

I am pleased to be a part of the event and very much look forward to the day and if I can offer any advice based on my extensive experience which helps Entrepreneurs and small business grow safely then it will justify some of the mistakes that I have made.

On a positive note our latest venture Million Impossible – Entrepreneur network is approaching its 1st birthday and I am very pleased with the journey thus far, however, it has not been built without facing many new and old challenges. We have a long way to go in order to make this business a success.

I am working with some very talented and driven individuals now and I am both encouraged and proud to know that others are now sharing my dream and vision and making it their dream and vision.

Million Impossible on line Entrepreneur Network and Raw Entrepreneur Magazine has been created for Entrepreneurs who can be honest about the challenges that we all face during our business lives but more importantly share those experiences with other Entrepreneurs, so that, as a group of like minded Entrepreneurs we can help prevent our peers from making the same mistakes.

Registration for Million Impossible’s Entrepreneur Network is free for joining members with and upgrade option for full members. I will update you as soon as the event is listed on The British Library website.

Kind Regards
Bradley Chapman

The Business Show Bolton 23rd October – The day we became a Team

October 24, 2008 Leave a comment

What a great day for our business! What a fantastic day for our members  and above all a great day for Million Impossible both at the show and back at Mi HQ.

As we approach our 1st birthday (November 15th 2008) it was a day of reflection for me personally and as you all know by know quite an emotional reflection in respect of my journey from Bankruptcy and back again.

Heidi, Matthew and Scott were all fired up ready for the Bolton Show and with Colin back at Mi HQ looking after the rest of the Mi sales and operations team, we had finally became one!

The doors at the Bolton Arena opened at 9am and almost immediately customers were drawn to our stand, which, with its vibrant black and sunshine yellow colouring was the most striking and inviting stand at the show.

Million Impossible - The Business Show

Million Impossible - The Business Show

Our £25,000 advertising and marketing prize draw was well received at and it clearly shows that Entrepreneurs understand the need to advertise and promote their businesses, even through a recession or financial downturn.

It was a very touching and feeling moment for me to see our customers reading, absorbing and dreaming about how Million Impossible could help their business and all this started from an idea that I had 12 months ago and now over 5000 people are part of that dream.

Rachel Elnaugh kindly arranged the stand for us and agreed to run book signings on our stand of her latest book “Business Nightmares- When Entrepreneurs reach Crisis point” for show attendees and actually sold out of books! We are looking forward to working with Rachel again on the 28th / 29th November 2008 at The Business Start ups show at London Olympia and wish to extend our warmest thanks for all her support and belief in Million Impossible. Rachel you once said to me “Never Say Never” and we took it on board.

I would also like to offer my sincere thanks to the following people who have all contributed to our success at The Business Show.

Chris Wright, Blackwood Productions – Chris has undertaken the massive task of delivering the SEO performance that our business requires to move our business up to page one in every search engine for 20-70 keyword searches.

Chris Wrigth - SEO Guru for Million Impossible

Carl – Designs 2 Go – For the wonderful pop up stands that he supplied for us to use at the show. They were the best there and we so easy to put up and use.

Kelly Parker , 39 Zero – The creative design and brand colouring for the display banners and main stand we both striking and eye catching, great design work Kelly!

Rachel Elnaugh, Rachel Elnaugh Ltd – The work that you are doing for SME’s within the UK business community is unprecedented. How you put others before yourself is a very rare and admiral quality. I am very much looking forward to working with you again at the London Olympia show. Never Say Never

If the UK Government can bail out failing banks then should it do the same for UK Businesses?

October 16, 2008 Leave a comment

With the recent news that the UK Government is bailing out our high street banks, it has caused a stir amongst local Entrepreneur and business communities. The Banks have made a mountain of money over the last ten years and are now asking for Tax Payers money to bail them out. It begs the question as to what extra help and support the Government Intends to put in place to help the business community?

With more and more businesses feeling the pinch is it time for support to me made available on a local and national level. After all, it will come down to Entrepreneurs once again to be creative and innovative with their businesses to get the global economy into a positive position once again.

With so many businesses failing it is more important now than ever before for Entrepreneurs and Businesses people to check and double check their risk in terms of both cash flow and above all profitability. If you cannot make a profit you cannot move forward and if you are not getting paid on time then you have a risk of going bust.

If the government could make help available to businesses then what do you feel it should consist of?

Low Rate Business Loans
Allowance to help train and improve employee skill and knowledge levels
Discounted Corporation Tax Rates for the first two years of trading
Research funding grants
Government owned and run business incubation centres

What else could we do to help UK businesses?

Entrepreneurs – You will know what to do in the morning?

September 29, 2008 Leave a comment

They say that if you have a lot on your mind and you need to either make important decisions, decide which route or direction to take your business, that if you sleep on it you very often find the answers that you are looking for!

I have deliberated for well over a week on the position that I find myself in and I still do not have the answers that I need. I am uncertain whether I have just worn myself out after 38 years of burning the candle at both ends or if the real reason is that actually I am scared of taking the next steps..

If I were honest, which I should be after creating the Worlds first honest Entrepreneur Network www.millionimpossible.com and now having launched our online Entrepreneur Magazine www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com ironically named Raw Entrepreneur – The truth is that I am scared about the next steps.

I am scared for a few reasons and I have to think very carefully about how I put this as I might offend some very close colleagues and friends of mine.

FIRSTLY – I am tired and of course a little burned out but that is no excuse for me not standing and the helm regardless of my personal situation. My team looks to me for inspiration, guidance, belief and direction.

I have provided direction and I must say that all I visualised has happened, perhaps not as quickly as one would like but is happening. The business has gained a certain momentum and we have created a market for our service.

I cannot keep finding the route and delivering the ideas and even if I do they need to be followed out to a tee and they are not.

SECONDLY – I now look to others to find the strength and  courage to move out of their comfort zones and attack or at least try something that are either unfamiliar with or scared of, baring in mind most will not admit that they are afraid, instead they will deflect and project  their fears on to another person or situation.

THIRDLY – I know that to move the business to next level it will take precise planning, a major cash flow boost and I will need the whole team behind the effort. Unfortunately we have a mixture of abilities within our team but very few of the team will actually take the time to read, learn and absorb a new idea or indeed take the important time to gain a far greater knowledge than we currently possess.

Finding the Answer?

I am not sure what to do. I have tried to push my people forward but it has and is draining me. I cannot keep pushing and it is taking too much of my strength.

Should I accept that some people do not wish to better than who they are even thought I know that they are just like me – Afraid?

Should I accept that perhaps I am different in that I look at challenges as something that can be overcome?

Should I accept the fact that the younger generation have very little life skills and in fact most feel that the world owes them a living and that working hard is something that is a dying trade?

Should I stop driving the people I love to new heights, new ideas and new frontiers as I always have done?

The Answer

The real problem for me is that after all the pain and adversity that I have been through in the last two years that I know that I have to stay strong for anyone who seeks my help, advice and guidance for both their business and most importantly their personal lives which can greatly impact upon the decisions that as Entrepreneurs we make.

So after a week of deliberating I have made the decision that different people will act at different times, some may never take action but if I stop being me then what hope do we have for the people who need help, support and guidance the most? None….

I will keep battling, I will keep driving and I will continue believing that we are all capable of so much more. I will continue to encourage and empower the people around me with the goal that if we take small steps then it will make for a great journey…

If you are bankrupt it’s not the end of the line – What a difference a year can make!

August 20, 2008 2 comments

Bankruptcy is not the end of the road in fact it is just the beginning for many of us.

Million Impossible’s online business network started with one man’s dream to help Entrepreneurs overcome adversity even if they were starting from a position of bankruptcy and to provide a networking platform where all businesses could strategically grow their companies whilst learning from other Entrepreneurs mistakes as well as successes.

My name is Bradley Chapman and last year due to unforeseen financial and personal circumstances I declared myself bankrupt and just 10 months later I am proud and honoured to have been re-appointed as a Managing director of Million Impossible PLC.

The last year has been the most challenging year of my life and although I would urge anybody that is considering going into bankruptcy whether it be forced or your own choice to seek all alternative options available to you which you can do by speaking to an insolvency practitioner before you make your decision.

I came up with the idea of creating an Entrepreneur Network that enabled business people to be honest about the struggles and challenges that they face every day during their business careers and due to my own experiences I decided to call it Million Impossible.

Just ten months on Million Impossible’s Entrepreneur Network www.millionimpossible.com is growing more than I could have ever expected and I am also pleased to announce the launch of our new online digital magazine called “Raw Entrepreneur” which features Rachel Elnaugh former MD of Red Letter Days and panellist on the BBC’s Dragon Den programme www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com

We have also successfully launched our no cost, no catch, free to advertise online Business Directory for any UK business to use www.businesssourcer.com and we already have over 5000 adverts listed.

Another web site that we have successfully launched is called Number Sourcer www.numbersourcer.com where we offer some of the UK’s most cost effective telecoms numbering solutions. We offer 0800 and 0845 as well as town numbers for a one off life time payment of £99+ Vat. Our web site provide a call monitoring platform that helps you monitor all your incoming calls and it is an ideal way of ensuring that your advertising is working for you.

We have now proved that regardless of your financial position, providing you have the right people working with you within your network, that you can create a new life and business as long as you have the courage, strength and determination to succeed in your chosen field.

For Million Impossible my team and myself the journey has just begun and if you are the type of person who has had more than your fair share of challenges in your lifetime and believe that the glass is half full and not half empty, then we invite you to join our network and together we can go from dreams to reality. To join us and register as a member free just click www.millionimpossible.com and meet new friends and expand your business network.

What a difference a year makes!

"Raw Entrepreneur" On-line Digital Magazine Launches today!

August 18, 2008 2 comments

Million Impossible Entrepreneur and Business networking website www.millionimpossible.com has taken another great step forward today with the much anticipated launch of their new on line digital magazine “RAW ENTREPRENEUR” featuring Rachel Elnaugh former MD and owner of Red Letter Days – The Gift Experience Business which she built from scratch.

Our magazine can be viewed on the following URL www.millionimpossiblemagazine.com

“Raw Entrepreneur” is a magazine for Entrepreneurs who have the courage and confidence to talk about the challenges that they face every day as they build their businesses. The launch edition features articles from all the main directors at million Impossible including myself as well our members who are sharing their journey’s with our readers.

So many business networks focus purely on success and happy clappy “Look at me” type Entrepreneurs or the BIG EGO’s that exist in the business market place. Million Impossible focuses on honesty with our members talking frankly about the challenges as well as successes that we all face and achieve during our business careers thus providing – The “ERROR” factor for our Entrepreneur members and readers to learn form each other.

It takes a stronger person to judge themselves first before judging other people.

As a business we are innovators and pioneers and therefore we have already educated other larger more “Cash Rich” networks who are or have acted on our ideas……. There was only one first man on the moon and there is only one Million Impossible “Innovators of Entrepreneur and Business Networking and Online business Publishing”- Million Impossible Plc

We hope that our new online magazine helps other Entrepreneurs who have or are going through challenging times as indeed we have during our journey

ENTREPRENEURS YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND TOGETHER WE WILL MAKE OUR DREAMS A REALITY.

Entrepreneurs find the STRENGTH whatever it takes

It’s Tuesday and we are only 3 days away from making the next step in Million Impossible’s journey a reality. Our online magazine called “Raw Entrepreneur” which features Million Impossible’s Entrepreneur members talking frankly about their journey’s is about to take flight.

The launch edition of the magazine features Rachel Elnaugh former MD of Red Letter Days and The BBC’s Dragon’s Den panelist. Rachel talks honestly about the loss of Red Letter Days and the knock on effect which can your emotions as well as your finances.

Well i titled the blog entry with the words “Strength” and i realise this week just how much strength you really need. As Entrepreneurs we are tested to the limits every day in terms of our belief and courage but where do we get the strength from?

Was it something our mother’s or father’s said to us that makes us fight to the death or do we just have something to prove to ourselves? Well I’m not quite sure.

I know that i have a burning desire to make Million Impossible a success and i believe most Entrepreneurs embark on a journey to make something real but i also feel that during this journey you actually go through a journey of self discovery that reaffirms your strengths and weaknesses..

They say that you are only as strong as the sales you make and this week we have struggled as a business in terms of revenue and that is due to lack of support for our sales team..  but at the same time i realise that the younger generation all feel that the world owes them a living.

When i was young i worked, today i still work and unless i make it happen no one else will. I try to be strong for all the people i love and care about but sometimes, just sometimes they need to find the strength within themselves…

Strength does not just come from turning up at work, its actually about vision and going the extra mile or indeed going above and beyond the call of duty,m in fact whatever it takes to become successful at whatever you do..

Anyway back to me and let’s talk FRANKLY about strength.. The last 5 days have been very tough. We are on the verge of getting our new online Entrepreneur Magazine published and read by what we hope will be in excess of 100,000 readers.

Strength is what you need to become a successful entrepreneur
Strength is what you call upon when the going gets tough
Strength is all you have when you are filled with doubt
Strength is what it takes to overcome adversity

Creating our Entrepreneur business network has tested our strength to the limits and i can certainly help any business person grow a business on a tight budget… We may be sifting through the trash cans at night to see what we can use after all “One man’s rubbish is another mans Gold” but we have become masters of stretching a pound note in the process.

If you have been tested with your business then i would like to hear from you. Actually you are not alone yet it takes courage and strength to share with others your darkest moments.

Can you share yours?

If so please leave a comment or join other entrepreneurs on our online network www.millionimpossible.com

Regards Brad
